Adaptive Recreation

What is Adaptive Recreation?

The SDFW celebrates diversity and authenticity by offering inclusive recreational facilities, activities, adaptive sports, and educational and cultural resources for the ASU community. These programs demonstrate our commitment to creating a welcoming space for everyone.

Tempe’s Sun Devil Fitness Complex offers the Adaptive Training Zone (ATZ), a training space developed for people with physical disabilities. ATZ provides a private and inclusive space with adaptive equipment.

Devils Adapt

Devils Adapt is a student-led training program for adaptive athletes. Goals of the program include improving physical strength and mobility as well as shifting the mental fortitude and confidence of the athletes. We accomplish this by engaging them in a 9-12 week training program, where they meet with the group three times a week. In addition to the scheduled workouts, the group gets together for events outside of the gym, such as rock-climbing, bowling, escape rooms and more. At the end of the semester, the group celebrates everyone’s accomplishments with a graduation ceremony and trip. Devils Adapt not only values the physical training aspect of the program, but also the sense of community that comes along with it.
