What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a low-impact, full-body workout that uses a specialized machine called a reformer to provide a personalized experience. The reformer provides resistance and support through the use of a sliding carriage attached to springs, straps, and pulleys. This system allows for a wide variety of exercises, catering to all fitness levels, to build strength, improve flexibility, enhance balance, and increase core control. With the reformer, exercises can be done lying down, sitting, standing, or even kneeling creating a whole-body low impact workout.

Whether you’re new to Pilates or a seasoned pro, our instructors will guide you through exercises designed to improve core stability, flexibility, and posture. All levels are welcome!

How can I participate in Reformer Pilates?

If you are interested in elevating your ASU Reformer Pilates experience, you can sign up for one of our semi-private sessions.

We offer four different classes, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Jumpboard to give you a variety of options and help you progress your skills. These sessions give you individualized feedback and are limited to 6 participants per class. These classes will run through the whole semester, January 12th- May 1st and are $20 per class. Class registration will open 48 hours in advance of the class time, just like our normal group wellness offerings.

Once you register and submit payment, your spot is guaranteed for the class. Missed classes cannot be rescheduled or refunded. If participants are more than 5 minutes late to the class, they will be denied entry due to safety concerns.

FAQ's

  • No equipment is required. We provide everything you’ll need. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in and bring water!
  • Please keep in mind that claw clips are not allowed to be worn on the reformers as they could damage the equipment. We recommend you put your hair up for class and will have hair ties available if needed.
  • Please note that grip socks are required to use the reformers and you will be asked to leave if you do not have them. If you do not have any, we sell ASU branded grip socks at the Equipment Room that you can purchase before class!

Mat Pilates primarily uses bodyweight exercises on the floor. Reformer Pilates uses the reformer machine to add resistance to the exercises, allowing for more variety, resistance options, and support during exercise.

Because spots are limited, missed classes cannot be rescheduled or refunded. If you’re looking for more flexibility, consider our Group Wellness drop-in classes instead.

All sessions are led by our Balanced Body trained student instructors who understand the needs of ASU students and bring a supportive, welcoming approach to every class.

Yes! Level 1 classes are beginner-friendly!

We recommend all participants start with at least one Level 1 class to help them gain a better understanding of what Reformer Pilates is all about and get comfortable with the reformer. Following that, we recommend you talk with your instructor to determine which level would best suit you and your fitness journey.

Jumpboard classes are beginner friendly and are designed to add in a cardio element that will increase your heart rate in a low impact setting! If you have never been in a Reformer class before, it is recommended you still start with a Level 1 class.

  • Group wellness classes: up to 12 participants
  • Paid Classes: Up to 6 participants for a more personalized experience.

ASU offers the same high-quality Reformer Pilates experience at a fraction of the cost, just $20 per class, compared to $40-$45 at most studios. Plus, it’s right on campus for maximum convenience.
